The Brain works by sending electrical signals. We know from decades of research that different parts of the brain Brain are involved with different functions such as language, vision movement etc. However, the Brain also organises functions by the frequency (or energy state) of the electrical signals. These different energy states are called Brainwaves and we divide them into groups Alpha, Beta Theta, Delta and Gamma. We can 'see' this electrical activity by using EEG equipment and specialist computer software.
A healthy Brain is able to produce the right level of each frequency depending on the task. If a brain produces too much Beta frequency when you are trying to sleep you will struggle to 'switch off' and relax. Too much Theta activity when you are trying to study will make it difficult to concentrate or learn.
Below is a Brain map we produce during an assessment showing the distribution of different frequencies at different locations with eyes open, closed and whilst performing a task. This tells us whats going on and what needs to change.
